The Arboretum is an educational, recreational and cultural resource for the Kansas City region. About 85 percent of the property is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of natural ecosystems. The remaining portion includes traditional botanical gardens, the Environmental Education Visitors Center, and walking trails. Plans are underway to include the addition of 13 gardens, four conservatories and a new Visitor's Center. The plan also includes a rose garden, training garden, various home gardens, the Rill Garden and a new wedding green.

Each year the Overland Park Arboretum volunteers organize a fundraising plant sale. Sullivan's Greenhouse brings annuals, perennials, herbs and hanging baskets to this sale.
